Is mesh the same as microns?

No. A micron (μm) is a unit of length. Sepoz offers commercial grades from 800 to 2500 mesh, but a mesh label alone is not a measured particle-size distribution. For a purchasing specification, request the actual distribution and measurement method instead of treating a mesh-to-micron guide as an exact conversion.

What do the D-values describe?

For a volume-based distribution, D50 is the diameter below which 50% of particle volume falls. D98 marks 98%; it describes the coarse end, not the median or a maximum particle size. Always check the distribution basis and test method when comparing results.

D502.629 μm
D987.2 μm

These are typical values reported in both the SPZ-35 and SPZ-35C TDS. They describe different points in the distribution of each powder, so neither should replace the other in a technical specification. The sheets report D10, D50 and D90 from Malvern Mastersizer 2000 results and D98 from the supplied particle-size distribution.

Sepi’s takeaway

Ask for the grade name, D50, a coarse-end value such as D98, the measurement method and the current batch analysis. Agree acceptance limits separately from typical TDS values.
